How to use ChatGPT for PR
“The playing field is poised to become a lot more competitive, and businesses that don’t deploy AI and data to help them innovate in everything they do will be at a disadvantage.” Paul Daugherty, chief technology and innovation officer, Accenture
In today's fast-paced business world, public relations (PR) has become more important than ever. A company's reputation can make or break its success, and entrepreneurs and small business owners need to invest in their PR efforts to stay ahead of the competition. One tool that can help in this regard is ChatGPT, a powerful language model that can assist with various PR tasks.
A number of businesses, small and large, are already beginning to take advantage of the benefits that ChatGPT offers, whether publicly admitting it or not. For full disclosure, I used ChatGPT to help me write this blog before I edited, and published it. The process took me 30 minutes, compared to an hour or two without it.
Another example of a small business using ChatGPT, is the company Lemonade, which offers home insurance. Lemonade has used ChatGPT to create personalized responses to customer inquiries, ensuring that they are always responsive and helpful. By using ChatGPT, Lemonade has been able to maintain a positive reputation among its customers and increase customer loyalty.
Recent statistics indicate that PR is becoming increasingly important for small businesses. According to an article in Forbes, Sharon Miller, President of Small Business/ Head of Small Business at Bank of America, said their market research is showing that “entrepreneurs are focusing their efforts on marketing and promoting their businesses”. There are 5.5 million small businesses in the UK so by using tools like ChatGPT, entrepreneurs and small business owners can ensure that they are staying ahead of the curve and leveraging the latest technologies to improve their PR efforts.
Here are some of the key ways to use ChatGPT for PR
1. Creating content
ChatGPT is able to generate high-quality content quickly and efficiently. Business owners can use the tool to create press releases, blog posts, and other forms of content that can help promote their brand and attract new customers. By using ChatGPT to generate content, entrepreneurs can save time and money while still ensuring that their messaging is on-point and engaging.
2. Crafting pitches and responses
Another way that ChatGPT can assist with PR is by helping to craft pitches and responses to media requests. Business owners can use ChatGPT (the paid for version) to generate personalized responses. For example, use the prompt "Write a personalized pitch on [topic] to a journalist at [publication]".
3. Research
With the right prompts, ChatGPT can help you analyse a wide range of information needed to personalise your media pitches, or even work out what your competitors are doing. You can also ask it to research what is being said about the topic you want to speak to, and ask it to suggest gaps in the narrative so that you can work out where there are opportunities for you to stand out by saying something new or different.
4. SEO
You can ask it to offer SEO tips and strategies to boost your online visibility. For example, use the prompt "How can I optimize my content for better online visibility in [indusry]?"
5. Headlines and Subject lines
Using ChatGPT can help you beat writers block when it comes to writing subject lines for pitches and blogs alike. You can ask it to suggest a number of different options based on what you've written so that you can come up with some eye-catching and unique to stand out in a journalists inbox. You can also ask it to suggest possible headlines and then work backwards to create some content to fit that narrative.
6. Repurposing longer content
Give it some long form content you've created and ask it to create shorter posts for different platforms - for example give it a blog and ask it to come up with a tweet, a Facebook and a LinkedIn post. Remember to give it guidance on tone and language in your prompt. E.g. Use the prompt "Read this article and create a tweet and a FaceBook post. The new content must be inspirational, empathic and influential."
ChatGPT can be a valuable asset for small businesses looking to improve their PR efforts and I don’t think we should be afraid of it. When you’re time poor, it pays to work smart, not hard, and AI tools can save us time and money while still allowing us to maintain a positive reputation amongst our audience. As more small businesses begin to invest in PR, and AI, those that take advantage of tools like ChatGPT are more likely to gain a competitive advantage and have the opportunity to achieve long-term success.
